How to Choose the Right Travel Backpack
The right backpack disappears on your back and shows up exactly when you need it. Here's how to pick one.
Start with the trip, not the bag
A weekend city break and a month on the road need different volumes. Most travellers are best served by a 28–35L main bag — cabin-legal on most airlines and still comfortable on your back.
Fit beats features
- Adjustable torso length matters more than pocket count.
- Hip belts carry weight — if your bag is ever over 8kg, you want one.
- Ventilated back panels earn their keep in warm climates.
Access: front-loading wins
A suitcase opens flat; a top-loader doesn't. For travel (as opposed to hiking), front or side loading means you don't unpack the whole bag to find one shirt.
Organisation that pays for itself
A dedicated laptop sleeve, a quick-grab top pocket for passport and earbuds, and an internal zip pocket for valuables. Everything else is optional.
Materials and weather
Look for tightly woven nylon or recycled polyester with a water-resistant coating and quality zips. A simple rain cover takes the worry out of the rest.
One-bag or two?
Many travellers do their best work with a main bag plus a packable daypack — the daypack flattens into the main bag when not in use and becomes your daily carry at the destination.
