What Goes Where: Personal Item vs Carry-On
Two bags, one rule: the personal item holds everything you might need during the flight, the overhead bag holds everything you will not. Here is the split that works.
Keep in your personal item (under the seat)
- Passport, wallet, phone and documents.
- Electronics and a power bank under 100Wh, which is the airline limit.
- Headphones, a book or e-reader, and a light layer for cold cabins.
- Medication and anything you cannot replace if the overhead bag gets gate-checked.
Keep in your carry-on (overhead bin)
- Packing cubes with clothing, and your toiletry bag inside a sealed liquids bag.
- Shoes in a pouch, stuffed with socks to use the space.
- A folding daypack flat against the back panel, ready for the destination.
- Anything bulky you will not touch until you land.
Why the split matters
Gate-checking happens more often on full flights. If your essentials live in the personal item, a last-minute bag drop costs you nothing. It also keeps the flight smooth: no standing at your seat mid-air to dig for a charger.
