10 Packing Tips for Smarter Travel

Packing well is the difference between travelling and lugging. Ten habits that make every trip lighter and smoother.

1. Start with a packing list

The single highest-value habit. Keep a reusable list on your phone, trim it every trip, and pack against it — not against your anxiety.

2. Roll, don't fold

Rolled clothes take less space and wrinkle less. Roll soft items (t-shirts, knitwear), fold structured ones (shirts, blazers).

3. Use packing cubes by category

  • One cube for tops, one for bottoms, one for underwear and socks.
  • A dedicated pouch for cables and chargers — nothing derails a morning like hunting for a USB-C cable.
  • A small kit for toiletries, kept leak-proof in a sealed bag.

4. Wear your bulkiest items

Jackets and heavy shoes belong on your body, not in your bag. It is the cheapest luggage space you will ever gain.

5. Plan outfits, not pieces

Every top should pair with every bottom you bring. A neutral palette with one accent colour covers a surprising range of situations.

6. Decant toiletries

Small bottles, labelled. You need far less shampoo than you think, and refilling beats buying travel-size products every trip.

7. Keep documents together

Passport, boarding passes, insurance and confirmations live in one travel wallet — always in the same pocket of your bag.

8. Leave a little space

A bag packed to 90% survives souvenirs, a wet swimsuit and the repack at 6am. A bag packed to 100% does not.

9. Pack a spare outfit in your personal item

If checked luggage goes missing, a change of clothes and your chargers in the cabin bag turns a disaster into an inconvenience.

10. Do a dry run

Once before a big trip, pack everything, then live out of the bag for a day at home. You will find what you forgot while shops are still open.
